Let’s Celebrate Throughout the Year
Let’s celebrate these exciting Malaysian traditions with our creative art and craft kindergarten worksheets:
1. January/ February: Chinese New Year
Every January or February, Malaysia bursts with red decorations, loud firecrackers, and exciting lion dances to celebrate Chinese New Year. It’s a time to chase away bad luck from the old year and welcome good fortune for the new one. People wear new clothes, give red envelopes with lucky money to children, and enjoy delicious reunion dinners with family. It’s like a big birthday party for the whole year.
2. March/April/May: Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr)
After a whole month of fasting during Ramadan, Hari Raya is a special celebration for Muslims in Malaysia. It’s a time to ask forgiveness from each other, wear beautiful new clothes, and enjoy delicious feasts with family and friends. A traditional food you might see is ketupat, a woven diamond-shaped rice dumpling. People visit each other’s houses, exchange gifts, and say “Selamat Hari Raya” which means “Happy Holidays.”
3. August: National Day (Hari Merdeka)
Every August 31st, Malaysia celebrates its birthday – Hari Merdeka, which means “Independence Day”! It’s a day to remember all the hard work people put in to make Malaysia a free country. People wave the Malaysian flag proudly, sing patriotic songs, and have parades with colourful decorations. The flag has stripes of red, white, yellow, and blue, and each colour has a special meaning.
4. September/October: Mid-Autumn Mooncake Festival
The Mooncake Festival is a time for families to come together under the beautiful full moon. People tell stories about a magical moon rabbit who lives on the moon. They also light colourful lanterns and enjoy delicious mooncakes, which are sweet pastries with special fillings. It’s a night to celebrate family, unity, and good luck.
5. October/November: Deepavali (Festival of Lights)
Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a vibrant celebration that chases away darkness and welcomes good fortune. Homes are decorated with beautiful rangolis – colourful patterns made from coloured sand or powder. People wear new clothes, light rows of oil lamps called diyas, and share delicious sweets. It’s a time to celebrate the victory of good over evil and the importance of light in our lives.
Learning Through Play and Family Fun
In addition to these festivals, here are some other ways to explore Malaysian culture with your child:
- Malaysian Costume: Look for traditional Malaysian clothing online and have a fun family dress-up session celebrating cultural diversity.
- Malaysia Traditional Games: Introduce them to popular games like congkak (mancala) or batu seremban (five stones) and have a family game night celebrating Malaysian traditions.
Make it a Family Fiesta
Learning about Malaysia doesn’t have to be a solo adventure! Involve the whole family and turn it into a fun-filled fiesta:
- Prepare a Traditional Feast: Find a child-friendly recipe for a popular dish associated with each festival and cook it together. Embark on a taste bud adventure around the world!
